🏮About Nikkei Matsuri🏮
One of the most popular celebrations of Japanese culture in Metro Vancouver held on labour day long weekend.
🎵About Masaki Yogi🎵
From a young age, the woodworking shop (Miyako Woodcraft 宮古木工芸) run by his grandfather Eikō, where they made sanshin (Okinawan three-stringed instrument) and other woodcrafts, was his playground. He would help with making sanshin and woodcraft items. When he was five years old, he started attending the sanshin classes held by Eikō, who was a sanshin master. In 2006, he obtained the teaching license at 15 years old, and in 2011, he won the Diamond Grand Prize at a folk song competition held in Okinawa. Following the legacy of his grandfather who has recently passed away, Masaki has reopened the Yogi Folk Song Research Institute in January, 2024. He also makes custom-made woodcraft items such as single-board tables and engraved signs. He has traveled across Japan and overseas to exhibit the Sanshin he makes, to attend live performances and repairs old Sanshin.
